BE WARNED

Between 4.45 – 5.00pm on Thursday 19th Nov a young teenage girl walking home in the Longdale Lane area was aproached by a man driving a white medium sized van.  His actions frightened and upset the girl.

The man is described as scruffy in appearance with spiky hair. He may have been a painter/decorator as he had what appeared to be paint stains on his trousers. If you have any suspicions as to the identity of this person or subsequently see someone fitting this description please contact the Police immediately on 0300 300 9999.  A vehicle number may be helpful in tracing this individual.

Fortunately this type of incident is rare but it can be very upsetting for the victim.  Whilst not wishing to alarm residents it is worth reminding ourselves, and especally youngsters, of a few precautions we can take when walking (particularly in the dark): preferably walk with friends, keep to well-lit areas and always be alert to other people and vehicles around you.  Please report any incidents similar to the one detailed above. Telphone 0300 300 9999

Latest Updates

Severn Trent Water Plc. have experienced a number of complaint calls from people who have received  telephone calls from persons purporting to be from Severn Trent Water. The fake callers state that the householders owe money to Severn Trent and that Severn Trent representatives need to visit the householder to collect this. This is clearly not the normal protocol for the company. Severn Trent will not cold call, either on the doorstep or by telephone. Any billing anomalies are dealt with at the time of billing and never at the doorstep!
If you have any queries with Severn Trent, contact the call centre on 08457 500 500. Alternatively they should call the police on 0300 300 9999.
If anyone attends your home claiming to be from the "Waterboard" DO NOT LET THEM INTO YOUR HOME and phone the Police on 999. Legitimate callers will not mind their identities and reason for being at your home being checked.

During October there were several burglaries in the village which have occurred whilst the occupants have been away or out for the evening.  The persons responsible for these crimes are apparently targeting properties which appear to be unoccupied - i.e. in darkness etc.

Please take precautions whenever you leave your home unoccupied - in particular we recommend leaving lights on and/or using time switches if you are out during the evening.  If you are going away on holiday there are a number of precautions you can take - a leaflet on the subject is available at the Contact Point (open 2 – 4 pm Tue/Wed/Thu and 10am – 12 noon Saturday) and in the library.

Report any suspicious people (including any casual door knockers, i.e. people calling on some pretext such as tree felling or asking for someone who doesn't live at the property) and/or vehicles to the Police on 0300 300 9999.  If you suspect a crime is taking place use the 999 system.

BE PREPARED
Now that the darker evenings are upon us and the days are shortening, we should be thinking about increasing our security during the winter months. More burglaries occur on Bonfire Night than at any other time throughout the year. This is probably due to house doors being left ajar due to increased access being required to and from gardens. Significant noise increase masking other activities and sounds.
By taking these simple steps to make your home look occupied, even if you are out; you can deter the majority of opportunist burglars.
1. Draw the curtains in rooms normally occupied at night.
2. Using timers leave lights on in rooms that you normally occupy. Do not leave only hall lights on, burglars will quickly realise you are not at home.
3. Leave a radio playing on a "talking" channel. Voices indicate occupancy to a burglar; they will not want to confront an occupier.
4. Securely lock all doors and windows before you go out, also set your alarm if you have one. If your home is blacked out, burglars will look for the repeater flashing on any fitted alarm box to see if it's armed. No flashing repeater normally indicates the alarm is not set so the burglar may try to break into your home.
5. Don't leave spare keys under plant pots, bushes or loose bricks. They will know where to look and find them. Hide any unused car keys.
6. If you have a dog don't lock it in a small room; allow it access to at least the ground floor. It's barking may well deter anyone creeping about outside. Be aware however that   your dog may trip your alarm. To over come this have Pet Sensors fitted by your alarm provider.
7. Ensure that external lights are working correctly. Replace any broken filaments. If the lamps are not working replace them with low consumption units, over time you will   save a lot of money.
8. Permanently mark your valuable items with your postcode or one of the high tech marking fluids such as Smartwater. Don't leave valuable items on display.
9. Should you go away ensure you leave a contact number or address with a trusted acquaintance, so that you may be contacted in an emergency?

COLD CALLING BY BURGLAR ALARM COMPANIES
The police have asked us to remind all residents, that no company has been given authority by Nottinghamshire Police to cold call householders offering them alarm systems with the recommendation of the Police.
Residents considering purchasing or upgrading alarm systems should use alarm companies affiliated to the National Security Inspectorate, www.nsi.org.uk or the Security Systems and Alarms Inspectorate Board www.ssaib.org.uk and are further advised to obtain 3 written quotes.
